What role does civil society play in contemporary democracies, and how can citizens engage in shaping social and political change? In an international setting, this online seminar introduces students to civil society, the third sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and civic engagement as key elements of democratic life in Europe.

The course explores civil society from historical and contemporary perspectives, focusing on how organised actors such as NGOs operate between the state, the market, and society. At the same time, it examines civic engagement as a broad and diverse concept. Students will learn how individual forms of engagement are connected to organised civil society and how they contribute to democratic participation.

Through European examples, students will analyse the roles and functions of non-profit organisations in areas such as service provision, advocacy, volunteering, and civic participation.

The seminar combines interactive input sessions with group discussions, collaborative tasks, and guided critical reflection. Students will work individually and in small groups on a series of assignments that together form a learning portfolio. As part of the course, students will critically reflect on different forms of civic engagement and explore their own motivations and possible pathways for active citizenship. Individual consultations are available throughout the semester.
