Inhalt

This seminar aims to explore the world cinema from a feminist perspective, focusing on the origins, evolution, and cultural significance of the female gaze.It will examine how traditional cinema has often presented gender through the male gaze, and how feminist frameworks including intersectional perspectives challenge and rethink these representations.

The seminar will trace the transformation of women’s roles in cinema from early works to contemporary independent, avant-garde, and mainstream Hollywood productions. It will also look at films by women directors in transnational contexts, particularly from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, that critically engage with questions of social roles and gender relations.

Through screenings, discussions, and readings, students will engage with key feminist film theories while examining gender, storytelling, and cinematic form, and explore how these frameworks reshape film aesthetics and our understanding of gender in contemporary society.
